United Farm Workers COVID-19 Relief Fundraising Campaign

As much as we want to uplift diverse narratives and students of color in the classroom, we understand this starts with uplifting our community first. We must set examples for how we show up for our most marginalized community members if we want value and representation in the classroom as well. Farmworkers form the backbone of Ventura County and so many parts of California, yet our schools hardly cover their history and their rights.

In a time where COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting those working on the fields, it’s crucial that we educate ourselves on the current conditions of farmworkers. UFW is the largest farm workers union in America and fights to pass legislation for better housing, healthcare, and pesticide regulations for those working on our fields. Cesar Chavez helped to create the UFW, a leader of the Latino Civil Rights Movement that has deep ties to Ventura County. Our local farm workers benefit from the work that UFW does, so it’s vital that we educate ourselves on how we can help their cause.

What we’ve accomplished:

  • We educated our community following the history of the agricultural industrial complex and the local activism and organizing spearheading by Cesar Chavez right here in Ventura County.

    • Have you ever heard of the Oxnard Strike of 1903? It was the first time that farm workers of different racial backgrounds worked together to protest.

  • Partnered with the the Law Office of Vanessa Frank to discuss immigrant and farmworker rights

  • We organized a restaurant fundraisers at Ventura County Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill Locations where proceeds went to UFW.

  • We also initiated a social media bingo fundraising campaign to support the UFW.

  • In total we raised $1,000 for UFW
