DISTRICT PROGRESS

  • Emailed all high school teachers in VUSD and offered recommendations on diversifying their curriculum

  • Have over 10 VUSD teachers join our Teacher Advisory Board and met with teachers to receive feedback and seek guidance 

  • Two Justice in the Classroom representatives on VUSD’s Ethnic Studies Social Justice Steering Committee

  • Analyzing VUSD List of Approved Literature and researching model curriculum

  • Working with VUSD to form a student council promoting POC youth in leadership positions and centering of students’ voices in decision making

  • Collaborating with the Assistant Superintendent to gain information on district hiring practices and advocate need for educators of color, as well as advocate for inclusive and accurate Sex Ed curriculum, and reform response to Title IX and SVSH issues

  • Surveys and a report

    1. Drafting a report on the status of educational equity in VUSD from publicly available data: researched data for student suspension, expulsion, absenteeism, and graduation rates.

    2. Created a student survey for middle and high school students to gather student testimony

  • Formed a partnership with Alternative Education Director and many of our asks for MSO were relayed by the Director of Alternative Education to the district, and were implemented

    1. Drafting a proposal for a formal peer mentoring program for MSO and potential further expansion

  • Supported CAUSE for their Therapist Not Cops Campaign and submitted public comments at two consecutive School Board Meetings

  • Representing Justice in the Classroom in local community coalition to remove SRO’s from schools, increase funds towards culturally competent mental health resources and services, and implementing real restorative justice practices
